Green performance cars are the new darlings of today’s small crop of boutique auto builders. From the Tesla Roadster to the Fisker Karma, and now, the new Ultimate Aero EV. The easiest way for the little guys to attract big attention is to make attractive, high performance cars with green credentials. So, it’s with a grain of salt that we bring you news of the aforementioned electric hyper coupe from Shelby SuperCars. Considering that the supercar manufacturer claims that its battery will not require a charge “for six years” (should we proclaim them early favorites for McCain’s battery prize?), powering dual, five-hundred horsepower electric motors, the whole thing sounds more than a bit fishy. It deserves noting that the battery technology doesn’t exist to support those claims and, while five-hundred horsies can indeed be extracted from an electric motor, that would have to be one big honkin’ motor… and they plan on using two in their EV. Guiness World Record for the fastest car? Really big EV aspirations? And now, it’s time for a reality check.

Last week we brought you the first batch of images and details on the new Quattroporte and Quattroporte S from Maserati. Since we’ve received requests from several Autoblog readers that we give them a heads-up on events we’re attending, and as eager as we always are to please, we’re headed off next week to Europe to sample the latest from the master motor craftsmen at Maserati. Until we get a chance to drive and report on the newest offering from the stoic Trident marque, we offer up this video that conveys the new Quattroporte from every angle and in all its beauty. Follow the jump to watch.

The 2003 Lancia Fulvia Coupe concept that tantalized showgoers at the Frankfurt Motor Show with its crisp lines that strongly evoked its namesake predecessor was presumed dead after Fiat canned the idea due to financial woes and want of a modern platform. It seems that plans for a new coupe carrying the Lancia badge is resurgent inside Fiat, though the clearly retro styling of the 2003 concept will likely fall by the wayside instead of getting mired in a retro rut.
It’s rumored that we’ll see a Fulvia riding atop the MiTo’s chassis at this year’s Paris Motor Show. Rather than relying on the work of 40 years past, the new Fulvia will share nothing but a name with its predecessor. The car may follow the current trend of other Euro coupes and incorporate a folding hardtop, but there are conflicting reports that it may also be a conventional fixed-head-coupe. We certainly wouldn’t complain about giving the MiTo an appropriate coupe roofline, so please send some our way.

VW hasn’t released any info on the car you see here, which is called the Golf GTI Performance design study, so we’ll call it like we see it. A black-and-copper checkered flag motif adorns the hatch, which is enhanced with a widebody kit, lowered suspension, and the expected wheel/tire upgrade. Out back, the GTI’s rear bumper cover is covered with more grillework than you’ll find on the rump of a Lamborghini Gallardo. A pair of giant exhaust outlet cutouts are also built into the corners. And speaking of Lamborghinis, VW has fitted the Golf GTI Performance with the dreaded “Lambo doors,” which look predictably ridiculous here. The exterior color scheme carries through to the passenger cabin, which gets a 2+1 sport seating arrangement and what appears to be a substantial audio system install. Not our cup ‘o tea, but it’ll probably go over very well with the VW tuners who take part in the WörtherSEMA… er.. Wörthersee Tour.

Concept Cars, Sports/GTs, Euro, Maserati, Misc. Auto Shows

Since the news broke that Maserati was planning a new sportscar to rival the benchmark Porsche 911, Italian styling houses have been lining up to pitch their designs for how they think the new Trident sportscar should look. Following the Chicane concept unveiled in Geneva by the students of the Instituto Europeo di Design, the resuscitated Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera threw its hat into the ring this weekend with the A8 GCS concept you see above.
Together with Touring’s other Maserati concept, the Quattroporte-based Bellagio Fastback, the A8 GCS design study was unveiled at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, the annual Mecca of class and performance on the shores of trendy Lake Como in Italy. Inspired by Pininfarina’s iconic Maserati A6 GCS Berlinetta of 1954, the Touring concept presents a compelling mix of modern design and retro touches. While it’s hard to make the case that, with even the most well-established outfits struggling to get by, the industry really needs another Italian design house or coachbuilder, if these are the results then we can hardly complain. Check out the images in the gallery below to see what we mean.
